Today together with the entire family, we had a great time visiting the Kuwait Islamic Arts Center show which was held by the Grand Mosque. This show is held every other year so we were really lucky to see it. It was so much fun for the whole family. They had activities for the children to do Islamic art and where artist made pieces of art for them.
Eileen and I were able to have each of our names written in Arabic calligraphy. It was fun to watch him write our names and then have Connett and Benjamin recognize the Arabic writing as our names. They take Arabic in school and are quite good at reading it.
The picture of the man standing over the tray is doing an art from from Turkey called paper marbling or Ebru. The picture of the tray shows the different colors he was adding to make his design. He was using a "starch" water that he put the paint on, then took the paper and placed it on the water and just barely pressed it down. When he removed the paper the paint was on the paper and the water was clear, it was really something to see. If you go to Facebook you can see the three pieces we bought - it was amazing to watch him work and to see the many beautiful pieces he produced.
This was a gold thread embroidered. It is done by hand and is beautiful. There were also silver threads running through it also. These were table clothes at least I think they were table clothes.
These gowns were hand embroidered using beautiful colors and gold and silver threads.
This man was Italian doing origami art in geometric designs of Islamic style.
This man is doing weaving which was very interesting to watch.
This is the man who created a piece of art from our names in Arabic calligraphy. Again you can see our names in Arabic on our Facebook entry.
We tried to go to this show last week but were told by the guards just outside it was closed for the holiday. We went back today and were told the same thing but Steven insisted it was supposed to be open. The guard finally said OH, yes it is. Another couple came while we were there and told us they came earlier and were told it wasn't open but they drove back by and saw all the cars so they stopped and came in. After being there today we wished we had been to it last week so today could have been a second trip but no such luck as today was the last day of the show.
